The Transition Chick Blog

Marcia Merrill, The Transition Chick, Career/Life Transitions Coach & Solopreneur candidly shares the ins & outs of starting a business & baby boomer women/midlife women & the transitions they experience! Turning midlife into the RIGHT Life & surviving into THRIVING

I own a business-I don't have TIME to do "social networking"!

I'm a culprit-I used to think that way...I've recently analyzed my ROI, and decided not to renew-memberships can be pricey!  Joining LinkedIn or Ryze or MYSpace is FR*EE.  Blogging is Fr*ee and is also fun-I love to write!

The point is-I'm now concentrating on getting more out of my LinkedIn, adding a MySpace page & putting my expertise on  Internet marketing  & Career Transition "out there.".

Read a networking buddy-Stephen Rothberg's blog-he's an job search expert

Information products, what are they & why do I need any...

I had no clue what information products were or even that they existed!  Not unusual.  Whether I'm coaching on transitions or marketing-career-wise...your resume, presentation ie. interviewing & first & last impressions... "selling yourself"!

For the solopreneur, marketing takes on a different emphasis-what can get your name "out there"-let folks be aware you exist!  Get clients, if, like me, you offer services...I can't give you a cup of coaching...But, I can have & do, a book you can buy!  A tangible, physical product!

Information products are tangible...sorta.  It's in that world of internet marketing!  That, now is the world in which I live most of the time.  Several times, in 90 little days, I've completed several information products (info-products to those "in the know") :)

Talk about transitions!  Nowhere in my Business plan, do I have the word e-commerce!  Yet, that's now a big part of my 7 step Marketing Action Plan.  I learned this through my Guerrilla(as in lone soldier, not the ape!) My Guerrilla Marketing Plan, a great class series-Teleclasses.  So now, I market my Get Hired Now! or Hire Yourself! Teleseries differently.  Click here for more info.

You've heard me praising the products class! It's opened my eyes, helped me think of barter, no cost or low cost marketing...

The sales cycle, the marketing funnel-all those concepts eluded me til now.  All I knew was trading my hours for my clients' (mostly midlife women)  my hours for their dollars!  Now, I use automation.  I have a shopping cart system that works when I'm not there or asleep...Check it out here

I still suffer from solopreneuritis-I feel tons of creativity, yet I want to do it all...Automation & outsourcing has given me back the freedom to spend my time coaching and authoring books & doing public speaking...and creating information products-mp3s, ebooks, videos, audios, teleclasses...How cool is that?

Throw away that resume...

Not just yet...but, your resume may not tell the whole story-especially for those dealing with career change.
Yes, I usually blog on Ask Marcia about job searching!

But, a program I do is starting soon, Get Hired Now!  or Hire Yourself!  -Sept. 18th @ 7pm Get Hired Now! Teleseries combines job seeking/business development strategies to accelerate landing a GREAT Job that fits.  There's also on-going support from me & our very small-6  people max.!  I want everyone to get individual attention & feedback.  There's really only 3 seats left for this next one or wait til next year!  Sign up at www.eCareerCorner.com/transitions/gethired.htm

Why talk about this here?  I have many boomer women/midlife women who rely only on online strategies and their resume!  There's so much more!

We create together an Action Plan with daily/weekly easy to follow steps.  I've facilitated Get Hired Now! programs for 1 year & 3 months, I've seen this system of support, guidance & mutual help keep participants on track & not feeling they're all alone in this finding a job "roller coaster"!

Shameless self-promotion?  Yes...But I know Get Hired Now! works!

Stuck-Why Do We Feel This Way?

Stopped In Your Tracks! Why Do We Often Feel This Way?

We often feel overwhelmed so we don’t even try to begin. Is it hard to start?  Of course it is! I won’t lie to you!

But, not starting, results in feeling “stuck”. I hear this all the time. I know we feel that we’re the only one…but, hey many say they feel stuck! About 90-95% of my new clients tell me that’s why they decided to get coaching.

Starting’s the hard part. It takes courage to even say to yourself-I’m beginning. It may be the 5th time-it may be your very first-it’s like doing anything that is a change…Quitting fried foods, beginning an exercise program, deciding to leave a job, start a business…They’re all beginnings and a change from what was-what we’ve grown accustomed to…

As a writer & teacher, I know the horrors of the blank page & feeling stuck-somewhat lost as how to begin… I know what I’m meant to do-I love coaching and am a Transitions expert. I dread thinking of that unwritten speech or the product/service yet to be invented, the books I’ve yet to write & the teleclasses I’ve yet to offer.  I’m a creator/innovator  & know it’s natural to be stuck in the place of beginning. And, of course, everyone who wants to change-be it job/career, being a solo-entrepreneur or in “transition” is the creator of their own life! We can get so stuck there that we don't even start.

What if what I write/draw/speak and it (pardon my French!) sucks? What if my family/friends say I’m nuts for leaving this job/marriage/town? What if they laugh at me starting/running a business?  But, so what? How will you know you can do it-if you never begin? It’s a given, some time, you will FAIL, be a total flop-close on Opening Night! (I’m a theatre buff!) What would happen if we just came to terms that Failure is possible-even probable…So is fear of this. But, as one of my favorite quotes-reminds us…Feel the Fear & do it anyway!
 Now, all pressure is off.

Failure is a part of success, but if we don’t risk failure enough we may not be as successful as we could be.

Going to a conference & my business will happen without me!

How do you spell relief?  VA as in Virtual Assistant!

She does my shopping cart, keeps all my internet marketing stuff straight, supports me in my solopreneur-dom and deals with my transitions "growing pains"!

I'm used to having to do it all-at least FEELING like I do!  But, no more!
My VA is dependable, detail-oriented,efficient and an expert at office management and she has a VA business and works from her own home!  No overhead!

Many biggies in coaching & internet marketing and other businesses.  I put a request on www.assistu.com just for someone on East Coast, now, I know, you can request technical, web, accounting, editing...you name it!

I just lucked out-she's in my state-bout an hour away...so, she helps me at trade shows, too!

I'm now in Louisville for the Career Masters Institute Conference...I know my marketing info that I wrote will be sent out & all my incoming emails will be sorted into folders -Business Important!  Personal, whatever else!  So I can travel & learn & talk "shop" with my colleagues knowing my business runs without me!  How cool is that?!

Do you buy the Law of Attraction?

Sedona-here's some pictures from our trip to the Wealth & Life Balance Retreat that I experienced in November.  Why think of it now?

Well, cause that was 6 months ago & after a jam-packed weekend of Law of Attraction gurus-folks who'd been featured in The Secret, had financial freedom & abundance & told us we can attract what we want.
So, I made changes, experienced some transitions, was more intentional about what I wanted...

I looked at the clutter in my life and got rid of lots-both physical-like papers & files but, also some old beliefs that weren't serving me.

I also took back some e-commerce resources & heard an internet marketing expert.  The balance of Business & Financial & the holistic/spiritual was a powerful example of what's possible!

There has been fans & naysayers about the Law of Attraction....What do you feel about it?

Thinking of Abundance & Law of Attraction...

When I went to Sedona for that Wealth & Life Balance Retreat, I had no plan that it would be the start of pretty major transitions!  Here am I, an expert on Transitions-wrote on the Transition Cycle & really help my coaching clients get unstuck & moving forward toward achieving their dreams.  I do this by creating an environment of support, comfort & positive energy!

Sure, I knew about the Law of Attraction & positive "vibes", but I'd never said I used this abundance-thinking in my coaching!  But I do! :)

At Sedona, I heard James Ray, a Law of Attraction expert-was in the "Secret" & his weekend was profoundly life-changing!

Why write on this?  Often, we think of transitions as negatives...but, they also have very positive aspects-it's often, a new way of thinking or acting!  This isn't necessarily bad.  The one constant is change.

What has helped you in transitions?  Me, it's Law of Attraction, abundance-thinking & intentionality.

What works for you?

The Transitions of our friends...

I received an email from a former student-angry that I'd lost touch-she did, too.  But, it's all good-I am not blaming!  Friendships come & go and what once was...sometimes has to change.  The transition from employee to small business owner...an entrepreneur & a solopreneur-makes time even more precious...Friendships are a very vital part of my life.  I want to keep them all & add more!

When my coaching clients are changing, some of their friends change, too.  New ones that support her new outlook...goals-dreams enter & those that don't/can't or won't exit...You won't be able
to say all you wanted to, and mourn this loss.  But, this is a natural & sometimes necessary part of the transition process!

Our lives can be so crazy busy that it seems we lose people along the way.  But, we also gain others.

My supporters/friends are mostly entrepreneurs and encourage me to stretch as I delve into Internet Marketing & eCommerce!

Can we hang on to our friends from a previous life?  I'm not sure.  What do you think?  Please comment!

How thin is too thin?

Just survived from a whopper of a flu!

I was listening to the radio & they were talking about the furor that the incredibly gorgeous Tyra Banks caused - she'd gained 30 pounds after her modeling career!  Talk about transitions!  Now, is she a slovenly has-been?  No, she's a healthy, voluptuous woman with curves!

Hey, I'd be thrilled if I had her "pudgy" figure!  Those form fitting dresses & pants tell a different story!

And, I heard that many countries are considering banning way too thin-ie: anorexic-lookiing, models from the catwalks!  A 21 year old Brazilian model-88lbs-DIED recently!  Guess, now, finally this ideal of never be too thin or to rich-might be called into question?

Many of the women I coach are dealing with staying positive-and many feel they are too fat and too old for the job search!  Then, when I probe-too fat is often 10-25 lbs!

What do you think?  How thin must you be?
