The Transition Chick Blog

Marcia Merrill, The Transition Chick, Career/Life Transitions Coach & Solopreneur candidly shares the ins & outs of starting a business & baby boomer women/midlife women & the transitions they experience! Turning midlife into the RIGHT Life & surviving into THRIVING

Information products, what are they & why do I need any...

I had no clue what information products were or even that they existed!  Not unusual.  Whether I'm coaching on transitions or marketing-career-wise...your resume, presentation ie. interviewing & first & last impressions... "selling yourself"!

For the solopreneur, marketing takes on a different emphasis-what can get your name "out there"-let folks be aware you exist!  Get clients, if, like me, you offer services...I can't give you a cup of coaching...But, I can have & do, a book you can buy!  A tangible, physical product!

Information products are tangible...sorta.  It's in that world of internet marketing!  That, now is the world in which I live most of the time.  Several times, in 90 little days, I've completed several information products (info-products to those "in the know") :)

Talk about transitions!  Nowhere in my Business plan, do I have the word e-commerce!  Yet, that's now a big part of my 7 step Marketing Action Plan.  I learned this through my Guerrilla(as in lone soldier, not the ape!) My Guerrilla Marketing Plan, a great class series-Teleclasses.  So now, I market my Get Hired Now! or Hire Yourself! Teleseries differently.  Click here for more info.

You've heard me praising the products class! It's opened my eyes, helped me think of barter, no cost or low cost marketing...

The sales cycle, the marketing funnel-all those concepts eluded me til now.  All I knew was trading my hours for my clients' (mostly midlife women)  my hours for their dollars!  Now, I use automation.  I have a shopping cart system that works when I'm not there or asleep...Check it out here

I still suffer from solopreneuritis-I feel tons of creativity, yet I want to do it all...Automation & outsourcing has given me back the freedom to spend my time coaching and authoring books & doing public speaking...and creating information products-mp3s, ebooks, videos, audios, teleclasses...How cool is that?

Throw away that resume...

Not just yet...but, your resume may not tell the whole story-especially for those dealing with career change.
Yes, I usually blog on Ask Marcia about job searching!

But, a program I do is starting soon, Get Hired Now!  or Hire Yourself!  -Sept. 18th @ 7pm Get Hired Now! Teleseries combines job seeking/business development strategies to accelerate landing a GREAT Job that fits.  There's also on-going support from me & our very small-6  people max.!  I want everyone to get individual attention & feedback.  There's really only 3 seats left for this next one or wait til next year!  Sign up at www.eCareerCorner.com/transitions/gethired.htm

Why talk about this here?  I have many boomer women/midlife women who rely only on online strategies and their resume!  There's so much more!

We create together an Action Plan with daily/weekly easy to follow steps.  I've facilitated Get Hired Now! programs for 1 year & 3 months, I've seen this system of support, guidance & mutual help keep participants on track & not feeling they're all alone in this finding a job "roller coaster"!

Shameless self-promotion?  Yes...But I know Get Hired Now! works!

What age do you have to be, to be in "midlife"?

Recently, I was interviewed on v1370AM-WomanTalkLive!  http://www.v1370.com
Hear podcasts-Listen Live!

Many of my coaching clients are in midlife. What does that mean? Many experts say anywhere from 28-60+, you can experience a “midlife crisis”-It’s all in your perspective…Midlife is a state of mind!

I had a client in Canada, 72, & she considered herself-MidLife & with that attitude-she’s starting a business, bored with “retirement”-she probably IS in midlife! We worked on the TRANSITION of being an employee to being the boss and starting a business
...Her marketing, and just as important-handling the lifestyle changes.
We  delved into the TRANSITION of being an employee to being the boss and starting a business, especially, being a solo-entrepreneur!.

Transition periods…they happen throughout our life. We graduate from high school or college, college to the “Real World”, we may get married, then, maybe divorce/separation, death of a loved one Transitions are often due to need to change jobs, we decide to start our own company, we get fired or laid off, we get diagnosed with a serious illness, Most of these I’ve personally experienced!  kids leave home- older- for college ..but also, children going to first grade, high school & needing mom less…that empty nest time…& more

Transition periods are a part of life. TRANSITION is really a process-what we do & how we react to CHANGE. But, often, we can be stopped in our tracks because of them. Or, sometimes, we don't even pay attention to that "nudge" we are getting that is signaling a transition period for us…perhaps nudging us to take a flying leap of faith into something new.

That nudge may be a subtle twinge, a fleeting thought, or if denied, a grand piano falling on your head! :)

What do you do when you feel that nudge?

Please comment & share your "Transition story"with us

Going to a conference & my business will happen without me!

How do you spell relief?  VA as in Virtual Assistant!

She does my shopping cart, keeps all my internet marketing stuff straight, supports me in my solopreneur-dom and deals with my transitions "growing pains"!

I'm used to having to do it all-at least FEELING like I do!  But, no more!
My VA is dependable, detail-oriented,efficient and an expert at office management and she has a VA business and works from her own home!  No overhead!

Many biggies in coaching & internet marketing and other businesses.  I put a request on www.assistu.com just for someone on East Coast, now, I know, you can request technical, web, accounting, editing...you name it!

I just lucked out-she's in my state-bout an hour away...so, she helps me at trade shows, too!

I'm now in Louisville for the Career Masters Institute Conference...I know my marketing info that I wrote will be sent out & all my incoming emails will be sorted into folders -Business Important!  Personal, whatever else!  So I can travel & learn & talk "shop" with my colleagues knowing my business runs without me!  How cool is that?!

Are you a Woman of Purpose?

My On Purpose Networking for women honored Patsy Anderson, creator/coordinator of the Womens Expo!
It was a fantastic event!  Here are some photos of some of the gang! :)

Patsy does radio, the Womens Expo-promoting it all year long & making constant referrals-showing support for baby boomer women and the solopreneur/small business owner!  Heck, even when we were honoring her-she referred people to sign up for my ezine!  "She is so funny & knows her stuff!"  Thanks, Patsy! :)

The energy & enthusiasm is so healing for a depressed woman or man-not convinced, she/he will ever feel better-having many transitions at one time!  Just feel overwhelmed!

I am a Woman of Purpose-tho' not an awardee...I love what I do-it is my purpose & passion.

Are you a Woman or Man of Purpose?

The Transitions of our friends...

I received an email from a former student-angry that I'd lost touch-she did, too.  But, it's all good-I am not blaming!  Friendships come & go and what once was...sometimes has to change.  The transition from employee to small business owner...an entrepreneur & a solopreneur-makes time even more precious...Friendships are a very vital part of my life.  I want to keep them all & add more!

When my coaching clients are changing, some of their friends change, too.  New ones that support her new outlook...goals-dreams enter & those that don't/can't or won't exit...You won't be able
to say all you wanted to, and mourn this loss.  But, this is a natural & sometimes necessary part of the transition process!

Our lives can be so crazy busy that it seems we lose people along the way.  But, we also gain others.

My supporters/friends are mostly entrepreneurs and encourage me to stretch as I delve into Internet Marketing & eCommerce!

Can we hang on to our friends from a previous life?  I'm not sure.  What do you think?  Please comment!

We all get overwhelmed, right?

I'm so overwhelmed-just spelled overhelm! :)

Been thinking lots about what we do when we are feeling the overwhelm!

I told you about my products class team-some are farther along being an entrepreneur, doing Internet Marketing-dealing with shopping cart programs & often, we are solopreneurs-so it's just us!

But, what happens when you "throw in the towel"?  You stop!

"A confused mind does nothing!"

If overwhelmed-often we've thought of an impossible goal-you can't help but feel like you're starting out behind the 8-ball...& each passing day feels worse. Then, the comparing begins-She's already got a web site! He already has products! Look at her-done teleclasses-(Insert your own comparisons...) But, comes the question:"How can I match them?  How can I compete?" Here's the great news! You don't even have to!! You are in the exact spot for you-there are always gonna be those miles ahead and you'll be further along than those just starting!

"Non T'a worry ta brain!" My New Brunswickian friend tells me constantly-Don't worry about it! I say-don't sweat the small stuff...and by the way, that's all "small stuff"...

How do you do "overwhelm"?  I'll share your replies or, better, yet-comment below!

There is no "I" in team!

I am in a product class.  This class is really great-it teaches us how to create a great info-product.  But it really emphasizes teamwork & to count on each other - it's divided into teams for a competition at the end.

Winning is nice but being on our team is all about SUPPORT!  I have never experienced this dedication and commitment-my team is amazing!   I wasn't a sports kinda girl-more individual competing than on a team...

Many of us have been on the phone-all day-helping each other-creating a team newsletter, composing a greeting card insert for one team member who has a card account, then she'll be sending out 20 cards to all our other members!

Talk about teamwork!  I added some blog posts and co-wrote a few paragraphs-brainstorming about our newsletter & lending moral support...Done!... Going to our team tomorrow!

I'm creating an audio and an ebook, another is doing a  membership site...still another is doing a Flash animation how-to guide...others are creating classes, workbooks, cds...we all are learning and doing and offering support to each other! No one will get left behind.

Have you experienced this team approach?

How to survive the holiday stress?

I've had pretty major stress-not to mention the holiday frenzy!  Before the eggnog or caroling...my computer had a meltdown!  So did I! :)

But, I'm better now-on my old PC-hope to get a NEW one!  After-Holiday sales are great!

But, promised to talk of surviving the holidays-maybe with your great, but, dysfunctional family.  Think we all need support right now!

1. Think of something that is lovable...or, at least, ok, about each one.  It'll keep you focusing on the positive!

2. If you need more, just laugh (to yourself) at how predictably crazy the holidays always are!  For example, Uncle Henry or Joe or??? always falls asleep after that huge feast & snores in front of the TV, someone always forgets the rolls and they are always slightly burnt...those 2 always bicker & ruin our holidays!  Whatever it is-laugh, see the humor-can't be upset or depressed while you're laughing-smiling to yourself with mirth.

3. Think you don't have to do this again til next year!

It worked for me-SHH!

World AIDS Day

I lost several friends to AIDS.  And know several more who've experienced that pain.  Yesterday was a sad one and a busy one.  Almost too busy to stop & remember...

So many talented, creative, caring men & women died of AIDS-related illnesses.

I know many didn't even know...not much on the NEWS...

Where is the support?
