Marcia Merrill, The Transition Chick, Career/Life Transitions Coach & Solopreneur candidly shares the ins & outs of starting a business & baby boomer women/midlife women & the transitions they experience! Turning midlife into the RIGHT Life & surviving into THRIVING

Balancing-Tips For Being a Healthy & Happy solopreneur!

Are These Statements True or False for You?

These questions (and your ‘true’ or ‘false’ answers), can be used as guide to either evaluate your ability to be a “Solopreneur” or to determine where you currently are at in your life/business balance health.

1. I have readily available resources of time, budget, technology, knowledge and a wealth of ideas at my disposal.

2. I have no problems asking for help when I need it, and am always open to working with others to achieve an ultimate goal. I have in place an “Emergency Back-up”-just in case I’m too sick to think!!

3. I excel at using my own initiative to complete tasks without the need of direct supervision.

4. I'm willing to make short-term sacrifices (even if it’s my health, sanity or clients!) to gain long-term rewards.

5. I seldom have a problem being creative (when I’m feeling great!)

6. I realize that I will make mistakes but I try to learn from them…Read on!

If you find that you are uncomfortable with answering some of these questions with a resounding “Yes! That describes me exactly” attitude, then you may need to work on these specific areas to face the fact that life happens…Balance IS the Key!

We’ve all heard the “doom and gloom” stories of businesses that have started off with big dreams of success, only to fail in less than a year after opening their doors. Why do some businesses fail to launch yet others soar off into the stratosphere seemingly with ease?

As a recent entrepreneur/solopreneur who longed to "be my own boss", here's what I learned about balance after being down with a flu/virus, then, a head cold/stomach thing …out of commission for 3 weeks!! As a solo-entrepreneur, being too weak & sick to move, I now can look back and share my “wisdom” learned the hard way! J

Here are sure-fire ideas to have balance in your business, but, more importantly, your life! J

  1. Ignoring your health-how AM I      feeling? I’m a coach-I always check      in with my clients & how they’re doing…Aren’t you as IMPORTANT?

I would slog over to my computer-hardly able to hold up my head…and APOLOGIZE to a client that I’m too sick to have a session that day! Sheesh-luckily, I have great clients who said ok and called me to see how I was!

It occurred to me that when I was employed, the boss would tell a sick coworker to go home, get better & don’t come in to spread germs & make others sick! J

Now, I’ll hardly spread my germs across phone wires, but, not trying to ignore you’re sick-even when you’re a solo-entrepreneur, makes sense! Give yourself time to get better. Denying you’re sick-I mean chills, fever, nauseous-(really ill!) won’t keep you paying the bills-you won’t be at your best & tough to convince anyone to have confidence in you!

Now, being a solo-entrepreneur means no sick leave, no benefits! But, not paying attention to your body has far worse consequences!

Now’s the time to cash in on that “own boss” mantra-the Flexibility Factor!

Here’s what I’m NOW doing-DON’T learn the hard way!!

***Mondays-are now Marketing Mondays! This is my writing and all my Marketing Activities-preparing email blasts for my VA to send out, writing ads, contacting vendors & 1-2 clients IF I want! Now, Tues, Wed & Thurs are client days and I may start 8am, after working out, lunch-2pm, back to work 3-7pm or later if I have a PST client! But, my choice! Fridays-Fun Fridays, I have a morning Networking group…This is the day to read my novel, have lunch with a friend, have 1-2 clients, if I choose!

This is my first full week back. I know learning to balance my time IS a learning experience!

2. You are a "salesperson". Regardless of whether you are operating a product or a service based business, you're in sales. You are the "product" and your packaging is how you appear.

So, how DO you appear? Do you conduct yourself so others feel comfortable with you and want to work with you? Listening closely to what your potential customer has to say will allow you to tailor your responses to fit their needs.

***Tough to sound interested when you’re huddled in a blanket, teeth chattering & weak from not being able to drink water!

3. Keeping to yourself. Now, usually, for a solo-entrepreneur, this can be a mistake…”No man or solo-e is an island!” ***But, now-you’re a sinking ship! Everyone for him/herself! DO NOT go to that networking event! Everyone will thank you!

4. Staying cooped up.

***It’s important to take short “time outs” for you! BEFORE you’re too sick to enjoy them!

5. Working for a tyrant.

Don't be your own "employee"! Don't spend 24/7 on the business! Don't do these things!  Learn from my mistakes instead! I know I made this error. I was exhausted and NOT having any fun…so, the universe made me stop-completely!! I got sick-why is it solo-entrepreneurs & women, in particular, have to literally be too ill to move…to STOP??

***I had a “job”. I was the "employee" with a tyrannical "boss" - me! But, now, my tyrant of a boss-me! DEMANDS fun & balance!

6. Trying to do it all is just not realistic & BAD for your health!

As a new solopreneur, it feels like you and ONLY you must do everything! But when you're stressed out and juggling so many balls in the air, some of them are bound to drop!

I learned not only can't you do everything, why would you? Is it a good use of your time trying to learn to do something and spend hours doing it when you can pay an expert and concentrate on doing what you do best?

I hired a Virtual Assistant. She is a solopreneur like me and works from home. We communicate by email and phone. She maintains my databases and my shopping cart; submits my articles; researches various software programs; and makes knowledgeable recommendations.

I got smart! She is now my “Emergency Back Up Plan”! I’d talk/email her & she calls my clients, cancels appts,(we share calendars) and, in general, handles things-so I can focus on getting better!

Do you remember why you went into business in the first place? You believed in your product or service and that it would be successful. This belief is essential, and it goes a long way to achieving success, but this alone is not enough. You need to also be willing to invest your time and financial resources, to learn and do the necessary things that will help your business to thrive. Enlist experts when needed.

***Have an EMERGENCY BACK UP PLAN!!

"We do not remember days, we remember moments" - Cesare Pavese.

***It is my fervent hope that by heeding my “wisdom through experience” you will be able to enjoy owning your business and watching it grow and flourish WITHOUT sacrificing YOU!

I own a business-I don't have TIME to do "social networking"!

I'm a culprit-I used to think that way...I've recently analyzed my ROI, and decided not to renew-memberships can be pricey!  Joining LinkedIn or Ryze or MYSpace is FR*EE.  Blogging is Fr*ee and is also fun-I love to write!

The point is-I'm now concentrating on getting more out of my LinkedIn, adding a MySpace page & putting my expertise on  Internet marketing  & Career Transition "out there.".

Read a networking buddy-Stephen Rothberg's blog-he's an job search expert

Information products, what are they & why do I need any...

I had no clue what information products were or even that they existed!  Not unusual.  Whether I'm coaching on transitions or marketing-career-wise...your resume, presentation ie. interviewing & first & last impressions... "selling yourself"!

For the solopreneur, marketing takes on a different emphasis-what can get your name "out there"-let folks be aware you exist!  Get clients, if, like me, you offer services...I can't give you a cup of coaching...But, I can have & do, a book you can buy!  A tangible, physical product!

Information products are tangible...sorta.  It's in that world of internet marketing!  That, now is the world in which I live most of the time.  Several times, in 90 little days, I've completed several information products (info-products to those "in the know") :)

Talk about transitions!  Nowhere in my Business plan, do I have the word e-commerce!  Yet, that's now a big part of my 7 step Marketing Action Plan.  I learned this through my Guerrilla(as in lone soldier, not the ape!) My Guerrilla Marketing Plan, a great class series-Teleclasses.  So now, I market my Get Hired Now! or Hire Yourself! Teleseries differently.  Click here for more info.

You've heard me praising the products class! It's opened my eyes, helped me think of barter, no cost or low cost marketing...

The sales cycle, the marketing funnel-all those concepts eluded me til now.  All I knew was trading my hours for my clients' (mostly midlife women)  my hours for their dollars!  Now, I use automation.  I have a shopping cart system that works when I'm not there or asleep...Check it out here

I still suffer from solopreneuritis-I feel tons of creativity, yet I want to do it all...Automation & outsourcing has given me back the freedom to spend my time coaching and authoring books & doing public speaking...and creating information products-mp3s, ebooks, videos, audios, teleclasses...How cool is that?

4 Hour Work Week-Don't forget customer service is not just emails and canned phone call hype...

I just got my THIRD full of hype canned phone call from a well-known internet marketing guru!  I recently spoke on a Team call for this (products class I'm in)of how I really despise recorded phone call messages from the mega stars in my field.  I know Internet Marketing isn't the only way.

But, not being really there and hawking a new program?  I don't feel unique, special or all warm & fuzzy and I'm very likely to not hang on to even listen to the tinny well-crafted marketing hype!

I think they've just lost touch with their customers and it's just a numbers game...Not personal at all.

My teachers of this class talk about helping the customer consume your product, emailing or calling( REALLY CALLING!) & asking how they're doing so far-giving helpful hints- on the phone or through autoresponders -shopping cart system, on how to get the most out of the ebook, program, mp3 set...whatever.

I had a question about his BlogWild affiliate-something didn't work... (now it does!) Andy Wibbels-super blog guru-get his book !  He called me-and it was really him...to check I got everything all right.
I bought Mastering Camtasia & Chris Austin, the creator, personally phoned to see how I was doing.
Mitch, a cool info-products and Internet Marketing guru has called to see how I liked his coaching program and Michael Port, the guy to call when you're tired of thinking small... has responded personally to emails.

That's impressive.  I know how happy my customers get & how shocked they are that I called or replied...

Customer service is important-I think even more important in this digital world!

(Links are my affiliate ones, but I'm a happy customer or I wouldn't recommend them!)

Climbing off my soapbox now...smile

Being a small business doesn't mean you can't think big...

I thing much more than being a solo-entrepreneur!  My goal is to reach more folks-midlife boomer women, especially & be known as "The Transition Chick" the one to call when you're facing a change in career/life...and all the rest.

I'm using an entrepreneur's biggest weapon-their creativity & passion.  The animated video, The Career Hero is in the "editing room"!  I wrote the script out of what my clients often say about the job search jungle-and I entertain & educate!

My animator is doing that piece-outsource what you know you don't know or wanna do or is better use of your time NOT doing it!

I barter for most of my PR, ads in exchange for articles, FR*EE Marketing for my animator, SuZanne Reed  reedandwright@gmail.com...very talented!

Can't wait to put my video out to you, my database from those that signed up for my fr*ee stuff & ezine-Have you, yet? :)

Gotta go & think bigger!

Bartering for time...

Outsourcing & bartering aren't just for the solopreneur.  Baby-sitting is outsourcing.  The dry cleaners is an outsource circumstance-you're not dry cleaning your shirts yourself, right?
I coach midlife boomer women on how to balance work & life-Home, friends, other things they want to do...
could be a new job or career, but, just balance is needed, too.  I can't sell them some extra hours! :)  But, I can help set intentions/goals and move toward life/work balance.

But, we can brainstorm ways to FR*ee up some time...
in no particular order...
1.If you work at home & have small children-have a neighbor who also works from home with kids watch all one day-so you get chance to run errands, see clients, network or take a bubble bath!

2.Trade your PC knowledge for help with lawn care, cooking dinners,-the sky's the limit!  Technology know-how is commendable & tradeable!

So, outsourcing doesn't need to only be for businesses!
Be creative!  What could you barter/outsource?

4 Hour Work Week

Yep-that's what I said...I recently finished Timothy Ferriss' book, 4 Hour Work Week...very eye-opening!  He recommends emphatically the idea of outsourcing as do I.  As a solopreneur, I just cannot do it all.  I've a wonderful Virtual Assistant who handles my e-commerce components-databases, shopping cart, autoresponders, and sends out my ezine & product announcements.

I was away about 3 weeks ago, got stranded in Houston-was a day late getting back!  Not  to fear.  Gloria had put all my e mail in folders-URGENT, Business-Important & so forth.

I'm going away to celebrate my birthday & 13th anniversary in Delroy, Ohio at the Eastern Tandem Rally!

4 Hour Work Week touts automation as well as using Virtual Assistants then, your business chugs along when you're not there.  See ya next week!

Why do an information product?

I'm a solopreneur.  Creating products is a way for me to S-T-R_E_T_C_H my reach & help more Boomer women dealing with transitions in midlife-career, empty nest...So I write ebooks-"Turning Midlife into the RIGHT Life!" at www.transitiontriumph.com  I also create teleclasses Get Hired Now or Hire Yourself! was my first product-a teleseries designed to get you moving forward to your goals.

I'm now creating an animated video and another info-product a coaching audio.  All these are automated & are deliverable without me so I can create more!

Any thoughts on info-products -love to hear from you-you can disagree, it makes a lively discussion!
Take care!

What is it like being a solopreneur?

I confess-I've been so busy doing, I had to stop + start BEING...after all, we are human beings, not human "doings"!
So, I took an unplanned hiatus-but, now, I'm ba-ack! :)  While away, many transitions have happened & are currently happening!
I, now, have a toll-fr*ee number for my coaching clients & others wanting to contact me about coaching them (if outside the state of Maryland)-at least 50% right now...now folks can reach me easily.  This is but one marketing strategy I studied in my excellent Guerrilla Marketing Coaching Certification course!
In a few days, I'll be certified-after 12 weeks of intensive study-I 100% think it's great!  Now I have another to add to my toolbag! :)
Seriously, I can help solo-entrepreneurs like me, who don't have the budgets of the "Big Boys" to play smart with their marketing-use low-cost or no-cost resources...Very cool.
I don't know about you, but marketing USED to be a tough thing to dread.  Now, it's not-it's actually fun.

Isn't that(fun) what you want in your life?
